Embracing Peace and Joy: My 2026 Intentions

Just like this tile, the new year is a ‘blank slate.’ The calendar flipped while I was on vacation in Marco Island, Florida, and I see this as a perfect opportunity to refresh and restart. Sitting by the water, I reflected on the past and wondered what may come—but I’m not spending too much time there. This year, I am committing to staying present in every moment.

As I put my thoughts to paper, two words kept coming to mind. I know most people choose just one ‘word of the year,’ but I felt a strong nudge that both ‘Peace’ and ‘Joy’ would be significant for me in 2026. So, I rolled with it! Using a black Micron on a Zendala, I began to tangle. You can see the initial pen drawing to the right.

When people hear the word ‘Peace,’ many immediately think of world peace. While I certainly hope for that, the word carries a more personal meaning for me this year: internal peace. I want to live in a state where I truly feel at peace every single day.

My favorite part of the Zentangle process is the transformation that occurs during shading. As graphite and highlights are added, the tile truly comes to life. Just as this piece has been transformed by these subtle touches, I hope to experience my own personal transformation throughout 2026.
